Scottish provincial or colonial spoon?

Post by Granmaa »

This Fiddle pattern dessert spoon has only one mark: a J or perhaps an S.
There's also an attractive crest. Does anyone recognize the mark?

Hi Miles.

I don't see that mark in my copy of Wynyard R.T. Wilkinson's 1973 book "Indian Colonial Silver".

Thanks Pat. I didn't see it in my Scot prov book either. Yet the design and crest make me think of British origins.

Another post that's worth a bump.

Any thoughts?

Could be the mark of George Spanenberg of Kingston, Ontario Canada, active 1845 - 1870. There are a number of marks for him in Langdon's, two where the stamped S is identical to those on the spoon. In addition to the S, one also has two 'duty' marks, and the other is also stamped KINGSTON. Will try and get a scan of the marks tomorrow. Regards John

Thank you, John. That one's been in my "don't know" bag for quite a while.
