I was told by the previous owner that this cream and sugar set were sterling however i have been unable to identify the marks. There appears to be a makers mark beginning with an R, then 3 symbols (2 of which appear to be heads, followed by an S which should identify the year.

Although Richard Sawyer died in 1812, it appears his business was carried on for several years following that event.

Marks on the creamer - the insignia at the start (RS) is so worn it doesn't show up in the pics.

What are the 3 symbols representing - i only know the traditional symbol for sterling being the lion or anchor

The marks on the sucrier are, from left to right:
- maker's mark
- duty mark (the sovereign's head showing that the appropriate tax had been paid)
- crowned harp (fineness mark applied to silver and gold in Ireland)
- Hibernia
- date letter

The Hibernia (Roman name for Ireland) mark was introduced in 1730 to indicate that duty had been paid. In 1807, when the duty mark became the sovereign's head, the Assay Office adopted Hibernia as the town mark for Dublin.

Note that the lion passant is the fineness standard mark for England only.
