I have a coaster with three marks (Crown Over Harp, Lady with Trident and W.T). The W.T (dot in the centre) is William Thompson circa 1797. There is no date letter. Also the Crown over Harp is inverted. The same three marks appear on a Chalice. with the Crown over Harp inverted.
I can understand why this is inverted as an act of defiance. Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone know why there is no date letter?
Thanks,
Carl

Inverted Crown/Harp
Re: Inverted Crown/Harp
I've seen this before, and all sorts of similar irregularities! I think the simple answer is that Irish hallmarking was far less strictly defined than British, and it is not unusual to see marks inverted, irregularly placed, or in different configurations. I think there's no rhyme or reason behind it, save possibly a lunchtime tipple or three!
