Help with Glasgow Maker Mc L&P
Re: Help with Glasgow Maker Mc L&P
Hi Rhodri,
The Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh, who hold the records of the defunct Glasgow Assay Office, make no mention of this mark. That may not be surprising, as I believe the Glasgow records are somewhat incomplete. There are two possibilities here, one is that the mark is missing from the records, or two, that the mark is a retailer overstrike.
However, I think I have found the answer. A search of a 1854 (the same year as that of the assay) Glasgow directory reveals the likely candidate as McLeod & Pollock, who were listed as jewellers of 164, Argyle Street, Glasgow.
Trev.

Thank you Trev,
that is fantastic and a very clever answer. I will remember that way to search when I am next stuck!
Thanks again,
Rhodri
