Robert Smeaton Spoons

Post by niceguy1 »

Hello

I have these 3 spoons by Robert Smeaton of Leith 1819. Two spoons have the additional mark of J&WM, who was that?

I also noticed that although all three have the date letter N for 1819, the ones that have the added J&WM have a pellet in the N vs. the other one has a regular N, why is that? Also the letters RS are smaller in size but interestingly on all 3 spoons the duty head is smudged.

Hi,

The J&WM mark is of the Edinburgh maker James & William Marshall. This mark has previously been seen along side that of Robert Smeaton and may possibly have been retailed by them.

Regards,

Martin.

Thank you Martin for the information.

Any thoughts on the extra dot in the date letter? & why the makers initials are smaller?

Hi,

Not sure about this, I have enlarged the image of the hallmarks, is it definitely an n with a pellet or could it be a capital H? As for the smaller RS, this is probably because more than one makers mark punch was in use.

Martin.
