Sheffield Sterling band on Knife J.A.S. maker

Post by hpidaves »

I have a 9 1/2" knife with silver plate blade and sterling silver band. The hallmarks on the band -- "CROWN LION lower-case-smooth-a" date the sterling to 1824, Sheffield. I have a few questions on this piece:

- Is the date of 1824 possible given the electro plated nickel silver blade (marked EP * NS)?
- What is the handle made of?
- Who is the maker (J.A.S.)?

Is it possible that the sterling was made at a much earlier date than the rest of the knife?

Thanks!

Thank you Phil!

The date chart I was looking at didn't go past 1916. That explains a lot.

Would the handle be Bakelite?

Thanks.

Regularly repeated lines in Celluloid are meant to imitate the genuine "Schreger Lines" in genuine ivory, so this leads me to believe the handles are celluloid and not bakelite, so I'm thinking celluloid, I guess it could be genuine Ivory, hard to say with just one pic and not having it in hand ::

And as regards the sterling silver ferrule vs. the blade, I have seen examples where the blade had a different maker and date letter vs. the sterling silver ferrule, so yes I have seen examples where the ferrule was made in a different year from the blade ::: I'm not sure why this is, were there silversmiths who specialized in ferrule/handle manufacturing, so the blade-makers would team up with them? :::::

One specialist noted in platers samples for Sheffield, but note for 1911 work does not specify if "Silver" is Sterling or the expected electro-plate (also working in "German Silver")..John Biggin Ltd. (scroll down): http://www.silvercollection.it/electrop ... rBdue.html
