Odd Sheffield assay marks?

Post by Peartree »

Hi, I just bought this snuff box. I thought it was very unusual. Looking more closely I am now not sure the marks are right? Sorry they are not hugely clear but I cannot find a date letter to match the Sheffield series c 1840, it is oddly struck too and the queens head looks a bit high in the oval? The lions back legs are a bit concerning too even allowing for wear. All thoughts welcome. That said it all looks old, an odd piece to bother faking given its low intrinsic value? Might it be the original maker faking the marks to save assay fees?

Thank you

Hi,
I think there is nothing wrong with this Thomas Bradbury & Son mark.
Compare with similar marks on a pair of candlesticks.
Marks are not perfectly struck on uneven surfaces.

Thank you. Encouraging! Are you able to discern the date?

Clean the date letter with a toothpick.
I think it`s cursive ``u`` for 1840.
