Four Soup Spoons - Sheffield I believe

Post by mgilland »

Greetings to all. The in-laws brought back four deep soup spoons from the UK 17 years ago. He has passed and she has Alzheimer's and can't remember the spoons back story. I'm trying to learn more about the spoons as they're too deep to put in your mouth but better to sip from the edges. I see they're silver, made in Sheffield but I can't quite identify the years nor the makers. Any help is most appreciated!

Welcome to the forum.

M&W is Mappin & Webb and these spoons were assayed in Sheffield in 1903/04. The reason that it is easier to sip from from the edges of the spoons is that etiquette demands that soup be consumed in that way. This site has numerous posts about Mappin & Webb, some of which may prove to be of interest to you; just put "Mappin Webb" into the search box and browse the results.

The fourth spoon, by GM&S (not known to me), was assayed in 1933/34.
