1864 Mother of pearl fruit knife

Post by Granmaa »

Here is a mother of pearl fruit knife made in Sheffield 1864. Jackson's doesn't have a picture of the I.O maker, but it does have the name John Oxley in a list (mark entered 1841). Can anyone confirm this or suggest another name?

Your mark is indeed that of John Oxley, Plate Worker of 25 Charles Street, Sheffield who registered his mark on 19 April 1841. Information provided by the Sheffield Assay Office Register.

A second edition of the Sheffield Assay Office Register was published in 1989 and was available directly from the Assay Office. I got mine from them sometime certainly after 2000 I checked on their website this morning and could not find a reference to it anymore. It would be worth a telephone call though to check whether they still have copies available for purchase - you can reach them on 0114 275 5111 - they open at 8:30 AM

Although it's not the same as the Sheffield Assay Office Register, you might find this website interesting:
