makers mark "A S" on pocket knife

Post by MaryBee »

I have a wee pocket knife, bone handled, silver blade with some scroll work
hallmarks are the crown, lion, and "h" (appears to be 1900 date mark), followed by "A S" in an oval
I can't post the photo but I hope someone can help!
Regards!

Hi MaryBee,

The maker is Arthur Worral Staniforth.

Another example can be found at: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 53&t=18595

thank you so much, Trev!
Was I correct about the dating (circa 1900)?

You're welcome.

It does appear to be assayed in 1900.

thanks again, Trev - with my wonky eyesight, I wasn't sure I was reading that chart correctly!
Great reference website, very glad to have found it!

So this is a knife with a sterling blade made in 1900? Doesn't that seem a strange choice? Why would sterling be used for a knife blade - is it possible it was designed for some special use?

Hi Jag,

Such pieces should be correctly termed as folding fruit knives. Their only use should be that of peeling and paring fruit.
