Exeter Hallmarks

Postby trice » Sun Oct 05, 2014 8:52 am

Hi

I hope this is the correct forum to post.

I have a caddy spoon marked RF with no date mark. Having read Miles's excellent article http://www.925-1000.com/a_exeterlions.html, I think it may be Exeter.

My questions are:
Is it Exeter?
If so, is it by Richard Ferris?
Is the duty mark triple-cuspid and if so is that significant?
I've dated it, according to Jackson's Hallmarks to between 1805 - 1817.
But with Miles's article this could be narrowed to 1810 as date marks started appearing on spoons then.
The bowl is repaired at the side.

Apologies for all the questions, but I'd like to learn as I've never had Exeter silver before - if indeed it is.

Thanks

Hi Trice,

Welcome to the Forum.

Yes, it is Exeter, and by Richard Ferris. The triple-cusp Duty mark would indicate a change in the rate of Duty payable.

Hi Trice and Trev,

I think your spoon matches up with my figure 4: 1798 - 1804.

Hi Trev and Miles,

Many thanks for your replies. I really appreciate it and this is a really useful site.

Apologies if I posted incorrectly; I did read the dos and don'ts but still wasn't sure if I'd got all the relevant information.

Again many thanks. I'll try not to be a pest.

Tony
