Please help! Silver Match Box hallmarks

Post by Robbo »

Can anyone help me please.

My father-in-law has given me a pretty little Silver Match box and I was interested in the hallmarks. Having fell across this website quite by accident, I was wonder if someone would be so kind as to help me understand the markings.

Much appreciated!

Hi

Well, if the mark on the far right is a Q, then I think it was assayed in Chester in 1899. I can't quite make out the maker's mark - it looks to be "something" H W. If it is a J, then JHW is an unidentified Birmingham maker of circa 1897 (see Jackson's 3rd edition page 359).

Hi, Your 'match box' is actually known in the UK as a 'Vesta' case. I think this is possibly from the make of matches that they were used to store.
