Hi all - we've just had this fabulous little horn beaker donated, and have been told by a dealer/collector that it's very rare, as most of these have a silver rim and very few were made without it. It looks to me that the hallmark is for Chester - it's very rubbed - and the letter looks like a J in a square shield - but there isn't a J in the Chester list.

Also, the maker looks to me to be AJC - which may be Alfred James Cheshire from another website, he's not listed in the Chester Makers on here.

Can anyone help confirm this, and maybe identify the year letter? These seem to have been made in the late 1800s but very few were assayed in Chester.

From what I can see of your image, it does appear to be the mark of Alfred James Cheshire of 52, Tenby Street North, Birmingham.

I'm afraid I cannot see enough of the date letter to give an opinion.

Many thanks Trev - the date letter is really rubbed and I couldn't get a better photo - I'm just going to have to go with late 19th Century, which is when AJC was working and when a lot of these were made.
