snuff box - unidentified maker

Postby simon3030 » Mon Feb 28, 2011 5:41 pm

Hi,
This is a snuff box, with Chester marks, which I think date it to 1895.
I can't find the makers mark of A & M.C, or what the little snake like mark is next to the date mark of F - it could be a C or what?

Overall dimensions 48 mm x 35 mm x 15 mm high.
Interior looked to be gilded once, but is worn.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Simon,

Welcome to the Forum.

The sponsor's mark is that of Abraham Cohen and Myer Cohen trading as A & M Cohen of 63, Lime Avenue, Liverpool. They registered their mark at the Chester Assay Office on the 18th August 1903.

The "little snake like mark" is in fact the date letter mark 'c' for 1903. See: http://www.925-1000.com/dlc_chester.html

The 'F' mark indicates a 'Foreign' import, for more information about this mark, see the bottom of this page: http://www.925-1000.com/british_marks.html

Trev,

Thanks for the reply - I wondered about the 'F', as it looked exacty like that indicated as used for imports, and is looks the same as the F for 1889....

How easy is it to establish where it came from? The designs look French to me, but I am certainly no expert..and all the marks are English.

Hi Simon,

If I had to make a stab at it, I would say Austria, and to beef that up, do I see 935 under the sterling mark? A known standard in use in Austria.

Regards Trev.
