Hallmarks on a matchsafe / vesta box

Post by atisdale »

Hi, I have a small match safe with hallmarks on it but I can't identify them all

Image

I see the initials J.F which I think is the makers mark.
A 1838-1890 duty mark
A lion, does that mean it's sterling?
And then two symbols that I can't make out at.

Can anyone help?

here's the whole image:

thank you in advance for any help identifying this.

Hi Annette,
Have a look here ->British Hallmarks
and then at the "Chester" page. They should answer most of your questions. Hopefully someone here can tell you who the maker was.

Thank you Tom,

I didn't realise the marks were sideways :)
