Tankard London 1767 W.T

Postby silverfan » Fri May 03, 2019 7:46 am

This heavy tankard (504g) is marked London 1767 and W.T in an oval shape for the maker. Who is it? Does anybody know the arms?

I think that this is probably Grimwade's mark number 3901 in his "Unregistered Marks" section. This section includes marks which are not necessarily "unregistered", but which were most likely included in one of the lost / missing registers of Smallworkers (1739-1758) and Largeworkers (1758-1773). Grimwade attributes this mark as possibly that of William Tuite and notes it as having been seen with hallmarks from 1760, 1761, 1767 and 1772.

Hello Phill,
thanks again for your helpfull answer. When looking on your own page I discovered the mark of William Tuite, but without point between W and T!?
In the internet I found that he worked from 1755 to 1775 and that he obviously was a skilled silversmith. Is that right?

It is likely that Tuite registered several marks. Only one, WT in an oval, is definitely his. Grimwade shows sketches of 4 other marks which he believes may be Tuite, one of which looks like the mark on your mug; all of the dates which Grimwade quotes coincide with the lost Largeworkers' Register. Tuite was working from about 1756 until at least 1773
