TWD

Post by nigel le sueur »

First of all you have no doubt realised that the item was assayed London 1890. l notice that the item has stamped on the bottom "Johnson Piccadilly " (l think), that is quite intresting because of the following
TWD was the mark of Thomas William Dobson who entered his first mark alone 22nd March 1886, he entered several marks up unto 1898 (died 1905 aged 71)
He comes from a family of retail silversmiths and jewellers, and his trading address was at the time was 32 Piccadilly. the trading name of the company (changed in 1877) was Dobson and Sons.
looking at the way the company moved on after his death (l only have until 1914) they moved to 200 Picadilly in 1905 and then to 110 New Bond Street as Gold and Silver workers obvisuly a quality firm which the teapot and bowl show.
At some time in its life l presume the item must of been resold in Piccadily by "Johnson" and restamped with their retailer name ?
