HI ALL NICE PEOPLE
I have this set of 4 early silver spoons which I'm not sure about identification.
Are they Samuel Roberts of Sheffield & then the date would be 1827?
Or are they Solomon Royes of London & then it would be 1819?
Is it usual for spoons from that period not to have a city mark?
Thanks in advance.

It is entirely normal for London silver not to have the crowned leopard's head mark at this time, but I have never seen a Sheffield mark without the crown. So I would go with Solomon Royes.

Thank you very much.

Oddly enough pages 642-3 of Grimwade's book note that a Samuel Roberts of various addresses in London registered marks on his own account at Goldsmiths' Hall from 1818-25 which were somewhat similar to those above. No connection is made with the Sheffield silvermith of the same name.
Solomon Royes entered his first mark alone on 22nd February 1820 having previously entered marks in partnership with Solomon Hougham and John East Dix. If the spoons identified above carry his mark they were assayed in the relatively short period between that date and 28th May 1820; the date letter changed on the 29th.
