Unknown Silver Maker's Mark...not listed anywhere...

Post by shak »

Here's an odd one! Looks like either "GWH" or "GWR". Note the scrollwork next to the vertical alignment of the maker's mark...any ideas anyone?

Looks like either "GWH" or "GWR" London circa 1815

What you have is three lines of two initials, for example:

A B
C D
E F

This narrows the options down enormously. My feeling is the top is closest to the duty mark. But I can't quite read them! Any chance that you could further interpret them.

Also, shouldn't the lion face left? Have you possibly flipped the photo?

Image Unflipped, brighter, but still none too clear. Possibly... Godbehere, W&B?

Here's one that may be a little clearer...It appears now to be
SG
EW
IR
Any ideas about who the maker(s) are?

Could it be:
Samuel Godbehere, Edward Wigan & James Boult.

I think you're right on! The date fits for the expanded three member partnership.

This mark is definitely Samuel Godbehere, Edward Wigan & James Bult. The date is between 1st September 1815 and 28th May 1816. This can be determined because the duty mark has a flat bottom.

SG EW IB were working together between 15th March 1800 & 15th September 1818.
