French Makers' Marks Project

Postby admin » Fri May 02, 2008 6:10 pm

Dear Members,
Today, the website has begun a new project of documenting French makers' marks. A modest beginning, just 70 or so marks, but I'm sure that this database will grow much larger over time. If you would like to help the project by contributing a mark image please send it to:

Many thanks, Tom

Hi,
The section is now up to about a hundred maker's marks, I've just added 5 or 6 that we haven't yet been able to identify. If anyone has the corresponding info for any of these marks, please let us know.
Thanks, Tom

I will be glad to help, but right now I cannot find a way to post an image with my question on the site. Where can I find the way to post a picture?

Kind regards

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the information. It works. I posted my question with the photo's. After that I looked into the forum more closely and I found a lot of answers to my question because there was a post "Louis XV or Hanau?" with the same false marks. This forum works!

Regards,

Zilverik

Hi, I am new to the forum and would like to help on this subject... I have pictures of some rare French makers' marks... but I don't know the name of them.
They are found in some French st.christopher medals I have from 1910s to 1930s. Here they are:

Found on a medal by Felix Rasumny:

Found on medals by Paul Brandt:

Found on a medal marked by the French Haro Fréres firm:

Found on medals by A.M. Langlois:

Found on a medal by L.Tricard edited by Dasset:

Found on a .800 silver medal unsigned:

If someone knows anything about them... please advice.
Thanks.

Hi Max,

Welcome to the Forum and many thanks for contributing the images.

If you are seeking information regarding these makers, you will need to start new topics for each one. Please post an image of the item together with an image of the mark, in the European jewellery section.

Hello Max - Are you familiar with the French Ministry of Culture's website for marks after 1878?? A quick search yielded makers for at least 3 of your medals. You might want to check it out.

Hi, and thanks for a quick reply. I'll do what you have said... checking the French Ministry of Culture's website and after that starting new topics for the not documented hallmarks.
Thanks again and take care.

There is a useful book entitled "bijoux et orfevres en haute Normandie" which has many photos of maker's marks of normandy silversmiths. If someone has the time to copy them that might help your project.
By the way, it would be useful if it was more clearly explained that to identify French silver, for silver plate the maker's mark is always in a square or rectangle, for gold or silver it's always in a lozenge (or kite shape).
