Moscow, 1879, assayer Ivan Konstantinov (Иван Константинов) (1875-1882), maker Nikolay Gurjanov (Николай Гурьянов) (1868-1883).

Excellent observation, Goldstein.

These are Moscow silversmiths with initials ИГ (no dots) I found in Ivanov.
888. Гаврилов Иван Матвеевич Gavrilov Ivan Matveevich
Mentioned 1912
1110. Горячев Иван Goryachev Ivan
Mentioned 1909
1128. Грачев Иван Ivan Grachev
Mentioned 1909
1172. Гришин Иван Яковлевич Grishin Ivan Yakovlevich
1892— 1908
1187. Губкин Иван Семенович Ivan Gubkin Semenovich
1841 – eighties
1220. Гурьянов Иван Ильич Guryanov Ivan Ilyich
Mentioned 1914
Silversmiths mentioned beginning 20th century are probably too late, but that`s all I could find in Ivanov, and as you are aware of, his book does not offer too many images of the marks.

Hi Ag2012 -

as the assayer Konstantinov, Iwan Jefimowitsch worked according to my sources from 1872-1881 (1874-1882) - here 1872, who is the maker?

The earliest 20th century year when one of the silversmiths was mentioned is 1908, meaning he should have been in business for 36 years starting from the year when the box was assayed. Possible, but not very likely.
The only maker completely fitting in is Губкин Иван Семенович, Ivan Gubkin Semenovich (1841 – eighties).
But this is an assumption, not very scientific method of judgment and based on two references.

Hi -
Gubkin, using several marks (and qualities) is possible - my first thought. From simple bread and butter objects to orders for the Court....remarkably enterprising! I enclose a photo from my collection of a similar cigarette case made by his firm and some of the better known marks:

and the more often seen marks

Yes, it's really ИГ. Then it may be Иван Фёдорович Головин (Ivan Fyodorovich Golovin), the owner of workshop, mentioned in 1861-1884. The year's mark is 1879 - not 1872! Assayer Ivan Konstantinov worked in 1875-1882.

Hi Ubaranda -

I have several cigarette cases from a certain ИГ in my collection I can not classify. I refuse to associate them to Gubkin or some random name which fit the initials. They are of high quality but nothing is known. Who is Golovin? What is your source?
Real existing objects are one thing - a name out of the blue is another thing. If possible I would prefer some more facts and some other comparable (style, technique, quality) pieces.

It is not Gubkin I believe, but either have I heard about Ivan Fyodorovich Golovin. The family name Golovin is known but no by the fore name Ivan. Yes Ubaranda, please tell us some more . Thank you
Nonetheless, Ivan Konstantinov is the assayer but what was his working period interests me as well? Goldstein mentioned 1872-1881(1874-1882), Ivanov says 1876-1882, Postnikova says as well 1872-1881 and Russian Silver 1875-1880. Who knows the correct years?

@Goldstein
There is no town mark on the case. However, the assayer is BC. That could be Vladimir Smirnov in St Petersburg 1866-1871 and this IG possibly found there. I haven't checked that yet.

Hi all!
Ivan Fyodorovich Golovin was the wellknown owner of workshop, the honorary citizen of Moscow. This information from В.Скурлов "Список ювелиров Москвы. 1850-1917" (W.Skurlov "The list of jewelers of Moscow. 1850-1917".
Information about assayer Ivan Konstantinov is from "Вся Москва. Адресная и справочная книга", 1874-1883 ("All Moscow. Address and reference book", 1874-1883.

Hi.

It's not 1872, it's 1879.

I.E.Konstantinov began to work like assayer (пробирер) of Moscow Assay office in 1874.
