I don't think you will find the maker in Vilnius but in Moscow. Anatoly Artsibashev assayed in Vilnius 1884-1888 and in Moscow 1889-1898. Error in Postnikov #2125. Unfortunately I have no idea who the maker МП might be.

Vilnius 1884-1888 A-A Artsibaschev, Anatolij Apollonovitch *
Moskva 1888-1898 A-A Artsibaschev, Anatolij Apollonovitch *
Vilnius 1899-1914 A-A Artsibaschev, Anatolij Apollonovitch *
Kiev 1915-1916 A-A Artsibaschev, Anatolij Apollonovitch *

Kiev 1915-1916 A-A Artsibaschev, Anatolij Apollonovitch *
The sugar tongs are stamped 1889, townmark Vilnius. This is a real mark with a real date. Conclusion: A. Artsibaschev could not have been in Moskwa in this year!

Different sources are sometimes giving contradictory working periods for both Russian assayers as well as masters. The explanation in this case might be that AA was the head workmaster of the district and not for Moscow only meaning that he was not an assayer only. Maybe he for some reason visited Vilnius but was still located in Moscow.

Moreover, AA moved from Vilnius to Moscow in 1898 but there are 365 days in a year. What date did he leave Vilnius? He could have been in Vilnius in 1898 but also in Moscow. Who knows? There are still too many unsolved matters regarding Russian marks and assayers etc...

Hi, all.

Zolotnik. This subject was already discussed : http://925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=37170

I can repeat only: "Anatoliy Apollonovich Artsybashev graduated from the Mining Institute SPb in 1880. Since 02.05.1884 he is a probirer of Vilno assay office. Since 1888 he is a probirer of Moscow assay office. Since 01.07.1898 he is the chief of the Vilno Assay Region."

Your oval mark is typical Moscow mark. The "equestrian on a horse" is St. Georgy, but not Vytís.

Best Reg..
