Unusual Chetvernik hallmark.

Post by numis.geneve »

Hello again I would like to have your thoughts on these hallmarks, I have never seen a square one before.
I will soon post some new purchases from my last trip to Paris, some Kiddush cups, a salt cellar and spoons

This is Vilno. The maker is М.Липман (M.Lipman), worked in 1862-1903. Assayer is Анатолий Арцыбашев (Anatoliy Artsybashev), worked in Vilno in 1884-1888 and 1898-1916). It's really rare mark. It's used for a short time.

Best regards. Alex.

Yes Mausha Ioselovich Lipman and Vilnius is the case. The assaying mark is rather rare and used most likely 1882-1898. I have only seen it once before and with the same year 1886.

My sources tell me different working periods for Artsybashev i.e.
Vilnius 1884-1888
Moscow 1888-1898
Vilnius 1898-1914
Kiev 1915-1916
but...?

Hi Qrt.S!

I didn't know about Kiev 1915-1916. My source is http://russmin.narod.ru/bioMinz01.html.
But it's very possible that you are right.

Best regards. Alex.
