Jewellery. Materials Craft Art

Until 22nd October 2017

Whether as an ornament, memento, status symbol or work of art – jewellery was one of the first forms of expression known to man and has always been a key component of all cultures. Jewellery is made from a wide variety of materials depending on the era, fashion or function, ranging from natural materials like shells and animal bones to gemstones, metals and plastics. The jewellery designed, worn and collected by people is always a reflection of social and technological change. The starting point of the ‘Jewellery. materials craft art’ exhibition at the National Museum Zurich is the comprehensive collection of the Swiss National Museum, supplemented by items on loan from the Museum of Art and History in Geneva, the MUDAC in Lausanne and the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. The exhibition presents materials and crafts along with core themes in jewellery such as love, rebellion and tradition and always makes the link with the wearer. There is a section dedicated to 20th century jewellery which shows how jewellery is being rediscovered as a form of artistic expression: it features items from the Art Nouveau movement by Lalique and Josef Hoffmann for instance, objects by visual artists Max Bill and Meret Oppenheim, and contemporary jewellery artists such as Johanna Dahm and Bernhard Schobinger.
