‘A Bestiary of Jewels’

Until 30th March 2014 at The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and then at Ruthin, Welbeck and Edinburgh

Following a highly successful solo exhibition at the Wallace Collection in London in 2011, Dr. Kevin Coates, a multi-talented artist, goldsmith and sculptor, will showcase an alternative new project at The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford this year.

Coates combines precious stones and gold amongst other exotic materials to create a virtuoso of fantastical and meticulous art. In ‘A Bestiary of Jewels’, he addresses the bizarre medieval encyclopaedias known as Bestiaries, which assemble lore and myth about animals. Pairing creatures with their significant human, Coates mounts colour rich jewels in a delicately painted ‘page of the book.’

“These fantastically conceived and brilliantly executed virtuoso objects are the most eloquent and imaginative expressions for our time” — Professor Timothy Wilson, Keeper of Western Art, Ashmolean Museum

‘A Bestiary of Jewels’ will tour around the UK to Ruthin, Welbeck and Edinburgh throughout the year and early 2015.

Opening hours (Ashmolean): Tues — Sunday 10am — 5pm

Admission: Free
