Priceless jewels of Queen Mary

All this week experts from Garrard's, Britain's Crown jewellers, were at Marlborough House, assessing the value of Queen Mary's jewels.

Apart from the collections of a few Indian potentates, Queen Mary's jewel collection ranks among the world's finest. They will form a large part of an estate which is expected to total around £5-million.

The collection includes the third and fourth parts of the Cullinan diamond which, friends believe, Queen Mary left to her grand-daughter Queen
Elizabeth.

The valuers' job was made easier because Queen Mary kept meticulous records of the name, date and value of every piece of jewellery she ever acquired.

Henry Pearson, managing director of Garrard, Ltd., the west-London jewelry concern, was in the witness box this week in the Earl of Shrewsbury will case in which valuable black and gray pearls are being featured. The earl it seems, left his property to a woman with whom he fell in love in 1908. He died last year aged 60. The present earl, a boy of seven, is opposing the will on the grounds that his father was not of sound mind when it was made. The jeweler said he understood the earl made a gift of black pearls to the woman. He had personal knowledge of gray pearls with diamonds in what was known as a stomacher brooch. The value of this was about £50,000. The jeweler thought that the black pearls referred to would not be worth £1,250,000 as had been suggested. When handed some "black" pearls the jeweler informed the court they were not black but gray. The case is continued and it is expected other gem experts will be called. The value of the estate involved is around £850,000.

PRESENTATION OF A TESTIMONIAL TO MR SCOURFIELD, M.P.

On Tuesday afternoon a public meeting was held at the Shire Hall for the purpose of presenting a testimonial to Mr Scourfield, M.P. in recognition of the long services he has rendered the county as Chairman of the Court of Quarter Sessions. There was a very large gathering of magistrates and the leading inhabitants of the neighbourhood, and among the company were many ladies. The testimonial consisted of a splendid candelabrum of silver which had been specially constructed by Messrs. Garrard, of London, the Queen's silversmiths. It has a skilfully wrought base with an upright fluted pillar, from which spring in a graceful form three branches. It is adapted for 10 lights, each of the branches being fitted for three and the central pillar for one. On the surface of the base around the central pillar are placed six allegorical figures: they represent "Peace," "Justice," and "Agriculture." On one side of the base is Mr Scourfield's coat of arms; on the second his two crests and mottoes, and on the third the following inscription —" Presented to John Henry Scourfield, of Williamston, Esquire. M.P., by a large number of the magistrates, ratepayers, and inhabitants of the county of Pembroke, in recognition of his services as Chairman of the Quarter Sessions of that county for more than 25 years." The candelabrum is about 36 inches high and weighs 700 ounces. It was placed on the barristers' table, covered with a cloth, and was not exhibited until the actual moment of presentation. It is a very handsome design & the workmanship is of the first order. The gift was also accompanied by a book, in which was written the names of the subscribers. The book itself was an excellent specimen of penmanship the title was illuminated, and the leaves were of vellum.

A SILVER TABLE-FOUNTAIN, BY MESSRS. GARRARD & CO., LONDON

The subject which is here lithographed was one of the great attractions of Messrs. Garrard’s magnificent contribution of precious metal work and jewellery. It is a “ fountain temple,” or centre-piece, the property of H.M. the Queen, designed by Mr. Lorenzo Percy, under the direction of H.R.H. the Prince Consort, the horses being modelled by the late Mr. Edmund Cotterill. The structure itself, composed after the style of the Alhambra at Granada, is intended to represent a shrine to cover a fountain, erected on the ruins of an antique building. Around the temple are grouped some Arabs leading their horses to water ; among which are portraits of three beautiful animals the property of Her Majesty. The grouping of men and horses is well contrived for effect when seen from any point of view. On one side a negro boy is quietly gazing at the steed he has in charge ; on another side a horse, startled by the sudden escape of his companion, is rearing, whilst the Arab is endeavouring to regain his hold, and a Persian hound, roused by the confusion, is seen in the act of barking. On the lower portion of the base, among the ruins, are introduced the flamingo and vulture, also the palm, banana, and other plants indigenous to Arabia. The entire work is beautifully executed in silver oxydized, polished, partly gilt, and enriched with colour in enamel.

Messrs. Garrard's Robbery

Albert Charles Lowles, (33), has pleaded guilty to stealing a quantity of jewelry of the value of £1,450, belonging to Messrs. Garrard and Co., jewelers, of the Haymarket. Mr. Bodkin, who prosecuted, said the prisoner had systematically robbed his employers for the last twelve months or more. The jewelry which he purloined he disposed of by pledging, receiving the usual contract notes, and the money he thus obtained he used to meet pecuniary difficulties, into which he bad fallen by reason of his gambling transactions. No suspicion attached to the prisoner, who was a salesman, until he suddenly disappeared. Prisoner, when arrested, made a full confession of his thefts, and gave every possible assistance in the recovery of the property. He was sentenced to three years' penal servitude.

EARL BEACONSFIELD

When her Majesty conferred the Order of the Garter upon the Earl of Beaconsfield, Sir Richard Wallace, a devoted political adherent of the earl, presented him with the magnificent diamond Star of the Garter, originally belonging to the late Marquis of Hertford, said to have been one of the finest ever made, with the understanding that it should be made an heirloom. From an omission in the will this was not done, and after the earl's death the star was sold by the executors to Messrs. Garrard, crown goldsmiths and jewellers, of the Haymarket. After having retained it for some months in the hope of disposing of it, but failing to do so, they have taken out all the diamonds— 390 stones—and re-mounted them into single stone and gem rings of different sizes, so that the many friends and admirers of the deceased statesman might have the opportunity of obtaining a valuable memento of their eminent chief. An earl's coronet and the word "Beaconsfield" is engraved inside each ring.
