Commercial Crests and Logos

COMMERCIAL CRESTS AND LOGOS

A topic for recording identified commercial crests, logos, monograms, etc., and the makers of such pieces. In a vast majority of cases these markings would have applied to plated wares that were used by hotels, restaurants, railway companies, shipping lines, airlines, schools, colleges, etc.etc. There are many interesting, and many mundane, examples to be found, but they are all worth recording, be them from the Titanic or Fred's Cafe.

If you have examples to share, then here's the place to post them. Unidentified crests should be posted in the 'Family Crests' section of the Forum.

This particular piece was retailed through Bravingtons London:

In 1898, W.A. Van Berkel, a butcher in Rotterdam of the Netherlands, invented a way to slice more meat to better serve his customers. The result of his innovation was the world's first meat-slicing machine. . By 1907, Berkel machines were being used in England, Belgium, France, Russia, China, Mexico and Canada.

Moving on fifty years, the Berkel sales force were members of the Berkel Quota Club, a motivating scheme that offered prizes to the company's most successful salesmen, hence the BQC logo shown above.

These forks, that bear the Elkington date code for 1890, are not without interest as they were the subject of a legal case in 1892:

Image

Image

These items were perhaps recovered by Elkingtons, the detail within the garter erased, and then, again perhaps, sold off, to recover their losses.

Loss of Messrs. Elkington's Action.–This was an action in the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice against Tivoli, a director in the Restaurant Company that bears his name, for goods supplied, amounting to £1,307 ; for which the company gave two acceptances, one for £600 and another for £107, promising to deliver further debentures for the remaining £600. The £600 acceptance was dishonored ; subsequently they received £407. In November last the company was wound up, and it was then found they had never issued the debentures, although plaintiffs had parted with the goods upon the representations of Tivoli in regard to them. Mr. Justice Romer said he failed to see how defendant could be made liable, and dismissed the action, with costs.

Gati & Rodesano, also known as the Imperial Café-Restaurant, was located at 166, Strand, London in the 1880's.

English Mail News

Per R.M.S. Ionic

London, December 28

Shortly before 9 o'clock last night a fire broke out at Gatti and Rodesano's restaurant at 166, Strand. Considerable excitement prevailed in the neighbourhood owing to the number of holiday-makers who were passing down the Strand at the time, but order was ensured by a large body of police. One of the kltchenmen named Elisco Sassella, went back to secure some of his personal property, and then found that his retreat was cut off. He jumped from a window 30ft. high, and was to severely injured that he had to be taken to the Charing-cross Hospital. The fire was not extinguished until the upper part of the restaurant had been destroyed, and the lower part much damaged.

Southern Pacific Railroad (Modernized Script)--Commonly known as "Broadway Pattern" by International Silver Company and used by several railroads. While a probable stylistic-extension and replacement for an earlier (1937) "Daylight" service, it appears that Insico may have combined the shape of "Elton" (1940) with the line detail of "Dartmouth" (1940) to achieve a new design not far removed from what Southern Pacific had been using (though we can't say it was specifically created for this reason due to the wide useage). The curving lines do have a strong resemblance to the two-tone orange & red paint scheme used to streamline locomotives and cars (looking from above at both sides). Beyond the lettering form of the railroad name, the pattern design would then place this most likely after 1940, with useage potentially extended well beyond this era. This fork measures 7 5/8":

Bowman Hotels Biltmore (1928)--Designed in 1917 (note blurred patent date) by Axel H. Staf, the Gorham "Commodore Pattern" was altered to make the "Commodore Variation Pattern". At the time, the Manhattan New York Biltmore and Commodore Hotels were part to a sister group. The Commodore used this pattern with a "C" monogram/logo. The Biltmore Hotels commonly used "B"'s for their topmarks, with variations of the design surrounding the letter for the different locations. By 1928, The Bowman Hotel Corporation had 14 hotels under control with nine different Biltmore's. Ice Tea/Soda spoon of 7 1/2":
