THE FAIRMOUNT CUP

Image

The Fairmount Cup

A photo of the cup presented to the winner by the mayor of Philadelphia is shown here with. In general form it comprises a bowl shaped body supported on a tall stem around which are grouped four pilasters. On the front of the bowl is applied a reproduction of the seal of the city of Philadelphia, with the central shield enameled in color and the whole framed within a wreath of laurel. The pilasters have the Ionic capital, below which is a decorative treatment of the caduceus of Hermes (Mercury), the emblem of transportation and speed. The lower part of the pilasters has a rich Acanthus ornamentation. Projecting from and supported against the pilasters are four winged automobile wheels, the symbolical significance of which is sufficiently obvious. These wheels rest upon a flared base platform, which they serve to divide into four spaces. These spaces are etched with a decorative panel treatment. The two front panels contain etched pictures of the Philadelphia City Hall and Independence Hall, respectively. One of the back panels shows the Speedway at Fairmount Park, with a racing automobile at full speed. The fourth panel has the engraved inscription, worded as follows: “Philadelphia Trophy, 200 mile road race, under the auspices of the Quaker City Motor Club, Fairmount Park, 1910.” The cup stands on a solid mahogany pedestal in dull finish.

The cup proper is 19½ inches in height and, standing on its pedestal, totals 24 inches. The diameter is 15½ inches. It is gold lined and finished in French oxidize. The weight is nearly 200 ounces. The bowl is also supplied with a wire mesh top for cut flowers, adapting it for use as a centrepiece.

It may be of interest to add that this trophy, which is of special design throughout, and required the modeling of the various ornamental details, was shipped from the Reed & Barton works at Taunton, Mass, within eight working days from the receipt of the order.

Edward S. Barton, salesman for Reed & Barton, is at the factory at Taunton, Mass., getting his samples for Fall. His headquarters for some time have been in New Orleans, but owing to the present outbreak of yellow fever he will not go back there for some time, although he retains his office in that city.
