THE STRIKE AT THE INTERNATIONAL SILVER COMPANY

An image of strike committee of the Meriden workers of the International Silver Co.. The committee represented the 4,200 workers out during the Great Strike at Meriden in 1915. A further 1,000 were out at Wallingford.

Image

The strike received great support locally, even the Mayor of Meriden showed his support. The Chief of Police praised the conduct of the strikers in a statement three weeks into the strike: "On October 4, 1915, a walkout and strike of some 4,000 people from the factories of the local International Silver Company was inaugurated, and this the third week, is still in effect. So perfectly thus far has the strike been conducted from a police point of view, that only one arrest has resulted, and that for petty assault. Thus far the appearance, conduct and deportment of those on strike is that of the law-abiding citizen.'"

An image of Albert and Elizabeth, the King and Queen of Belgium, during their visit to New York in October 1919. Here they are just leaving the jewelry establishment of Dreicer & Co. on Fifth Avenue and are being escorted by Michael Dreicer (centre).

Queen Elizabeth, especially, was highly regarded in the States, so much so that she had a flatware pattern named after her, see:
