HESSENBERG & Co.

13, Kaiserstraße, Frankfurt am Main

Image
Hessenberg & Co. - Frankfurt - 1902

Image
Hessenberg & Co. - Frankfurt - 1907

The business has its origins with Carl Hessenberg (1736-1807) in 1768, and he was followed by Wilhelm Conrad Hessenberg (1775-1837) who was later joined by his son Johann Friedrich Hessenberg ( 1810-1874). The firm was restyled to Sackermann, Hessenburg & Co. (Christoph Conrad Sackermann, Johann Friedrich Hessenberg, and Johann Hermann Wirsing) in 1845. The business was restyled to Hessenberg & Co. in 1866. The firm remained prosperous up until WWII, but although they continued after that event, it was on a much smaller scale. In 1968 they celebrated their 200th anniversary in business.

The mark and example of the work of Sackermann, Hessenburg & Co.:

Established in 1858.

H.F. Winkelmann displayed their wares at the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880. A report read as follows:

There is a fine stand of electroplate ware shown by H. F. Winkelmann, of Berlin. The articles are useful and of extremely elegant design. The beer-seidels have now patent tops. When the knob at the top of the handle of the vessel is pressed by the thumb to open it, the lid, instead of rising up, moves off to the right, leaving the mouth of the seidel wholly uncovered. The fruit dishes and epergnes are exceedingly handsome, the ice buckets are beautifully chased, and the tea and coffee sets are of light and pleasing design.
