George Beers of Montreal to organize the Canadian Lacrosse Emigration Tour, which toured Great Britain, 1883, and distributed over 800,000 books and pamphlets giving information about Canada. Author of the following books and pamphlets: "Lacrosse and How to Play It" (2 editions); "Canadian Pioneers"; "Ontario's True National Policy in Regard to Black and White Coal"; "The Milk Question"; "Why a Protective Tariff Policy Is Necessary for Canada"; "Imperial Federation"; "Canada First in the Empire." Col. W. K. McNaught, president of the American Watch Case Co. of Toronto, who has been seriously ill for some time, underwent an operation on April 20, which was successfully performed. He has since been improving rapidly.

DEATH OF WM. K. McNAUGHT

Prominent Canadian Jeweler, Watch Case Maker and Army Officer Passes Away

Toronto, Can., Feb. 5.–The death of Col. William K. McNaught, C. M. G., president and general manager of the American Watch Case Co., of Toronto, occurred on last Sunday at his residence, 614 Huron St. He was in his 74th year. He returned last week from a business trip to New York suffering from bronchitis, which combined with a weak heart caused his death.




He was born in Fergus, Ont., and began his business career with Robert Wilkes & Co., wholesale jewelers, of Toronto, severing his connection with that firm in 1877 to establish the wholesale jewelry business of Zimmerman, McNaught & Lowe. In 1885 he sold out his interest in that company to organize the American Watch Case Co., of which he became president and general manager in 1904. Notwithstanding the demands of his business upon his time and attention, Col. McNaught was very active in public affairs. He was president of the Canadian National Exhibition from 1901 to 1905; president of the Canadian Manufacturers' Association in 1896-8; chairman of the Tariff Commission from 1899 to 1905; a member of the Ontario Hydro-Electric Power Commission since 1906, a director of the National Consumptive Sanitarium Association and the British Empire League; chairman of the Liquor License Board of Toronto in 1905-6, and a member of the executive committee of the Canadian Reconstructive Association.

Col. McNaught was elected to the Ontario Legislature as Conservative representative of North Toronto in 1906 and continued to hold that position until 1914. During his term of service he was instrumental in securing the adoption of a number of important measures and was a strong supporter of advanced temperance legislation.

He was deeply interested in military matters and, when a young man, served in the Queen's Own Rifles and was afterwards an officer in the 12th York Rangers. He won many prizes for rifle and revolver shooting.

At the outbreak of the war he offered his services to the Government and was attached to the headquarters staff with the rank of honorary colonel. He did splendid services as a member of the Special Land Transport Committee as well as in connection with recruiting work. Col. McNaught raised $100,000 for a battery of armored cars and superintended the construction of cars and the organization of the Eaton Machine Gun Brigade. He was a keen sportsman and was at one time vice president of the Toronto Rowing Club and president of the National Amateur Lacrosse Association.

In recognition of his notable work in reorganizing the Canadian National Exhibition he was the recipient of a silver service at a public banquet, and on resigning the presidency was made a life member of the association.

Col. McNaught is survived by his widow, three sons, and one daughter.

Thomas McNaught, an old time jeweler, who was formerly in partnership with his brother, the late Col. W. K. McNaught, in the wholesale jewelry business in Toronto, died on Nov. 1 in his 81st year. He retired from business about 20 years ago. Mr. McNaught was unmarried and is survived by a sister.

The distinction of being one of the oldest and best known jewelers in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and the first landscape photographer to take pictures of the beauties of the Falls and surrounding scenery on the Canadian side of the river, belongs to Mr. John England, for more than four score of years, a prominent factor in the commercial life of this city. He has a fine store and studio at No. 126 Main Street, which was established by him in 1866 and occupying an attractive two storey brick building owned by him. The store is stocked with the best quality of gold and silverware, watches of the finest makes, and clocks in unique designs ; dainty jewelry and novelties in gold and silver. A specialty is made of diamonds and gems, and a fine line of these stones, of the first water and loose or in rich settings, is carried. In conjunction he has a well equipped and handsomely furnished studio, where he does all kinds of photographic work. His specialty is commercial and landscape photography, and his reputation in these lines extends all over the Dominion and the United States as well, while his photographs are to he found in every part of the world. Mr. England is one of the substantial and influential business men of Niagara Falls.

Private S. H. Rosebrugh died at the Strathcona Military Hospital, Edmonton, Alta, on July 18. He was invalided home last Fall after being gassed at the front and never recovered from the effects. Previous to enlisting he conducted a jewelry business at Vermilion, Alta. He was 46 years of age and leaves a widow and two children.

ROBBERS RANSACK JEWELLER'S STORE

Experienced Thieves Visit St. Hyacinthe Establishment During Night

St. Hyacinthe, Que., August 3.– Burglars forced an entrance Into the premises of Oscar Pothier, oldest jewellery establishment in this city, early this morning, and made their escape with a stock of merchandise valued at nearly $5,000. An automobile jack was used to lift and smash the steel bars reinforcing the read door of the store, and police expressed the opinion today that the burglars responsible for the robbery were experienced hands.

The Oscar Pothier jewellery store is situated at 177, Cascades Street. The burglary is believed to have been committed between four and five o'clock, as V. Kakos, restaurateur and proprietor of the building, made a round at 3.30 o'clock this morning and found everything in order.

Articles of little value were either left untouched or thrown on the floor of the establishment and everything was found upset upon the opening of the store this morning.

Chief Adjutor Bouggeois, head of the St. Hyacinthe police is now investigating the case together with officers of the Provincial Police force. Several finger prints were carefully examined by the investigating sleuths, and also the automobile jack that was left behind by the burglars.

T. & J. SMALLWOOD

The jewelry store of T. & J. Smallwood, 1076 Bloor St., West, Toronto, was robbed of diamond rings valued at about $1,000 on Sept. 16 by an unknown man, who entered the store and asked to be shown some necklaces. He was shown a number of rings by Thomas Smallwood, but took exception to the quality of the goods, alleging that some of the stones were imperfect. Mr. Smallwood offered to procure others in the city which might prove more satisfactory, and arranged for an interview later in the day. This took place and the customer again objected to one of the stones in the necklace which he said contained a flaw. Mr. Smallwood stepped to the rear of the store to replace it, and as soon as his back was turned the visitor secured 23 rings exposed on a tray. On Mr. Smallwood's return the thief asked to be excused for a minute while he went to a store next door to make a purchase. That was the last seen of him.

Clockmaker to the Pacific Section of the Canadian Pacific Railway.


F. Crake, the well-known watchmaker and jeweler of New Westminster, B. C., tells a singular story. A gentleman dropped into Mr. Crake’s shop the other day and left an old-fashioned watch to be repaired. On opening the case Mr. Crake found that he had repaired the same watch exactly thirty years ago, in a town in one of the midland counties in England. Mr. Crake's name was scratched inside with the date and year when it had last been in his hands. That the watch should again come into Mr. Crake’s hands for a similar attention after a lapse of thirty years, and in a country thousands of miles distant from where he had last seen it, is an occurrence of more than ordinary interest.

W.H. Wilkerson absorbed the business of W.B. Shakespeare in 1909. An employee of W.B. Shakespeare, Frederic William Francis, who started his apprenticeship with Shakespeare in 1906, stayed on with Wilkerson until 1921 before setting up on his own account. In 1928 Francis was joined by his son, Hugh, and the business restyled to F.W. Francis and Co. In 1934 F.W. Francis and Co. bought out W.H. Wilkerson.

T.J. Duley was the father of the novelist, Margaret Iris Duley (b.27-9-1894-d.22-3-1968).


Died. T.J. DULEY, a prominent jeweler of St. John’s, died Wednesday, age 57 years.
