THIEVES AT WORK

Organized Gang of Window Smashers Operating in Montreal, Can.

Montreal, Can., Nov. 8.—Jewelry robberies have been numerous recently, indicating that a well organized gang of thieves are operating systematically, using the familiar process of breaking the windows and making away with such valuables as can be secured through the aperture.

On the morning of Nov. 6 thieves made an attempt to cut with a diamond the window of the store of Henry Scott, 479 St. Catherine St. Failing in this they broke the glass with a brick. Mr. Scott was awakened by the crash of the glass, but before he could interfere the robbers had secured jewelry valued at about $600 and made their escape.

JAMES GRANT

Wellington Street, Ottawa

SUDDEN DEATH

At a late hour on Thursday night, Mr. James Grant, watchmaker and jeweller, Wellington Street, was found dead in the yard in the rear of his premises. It appears that after closing up his shop for the night he went to the yard, where remaining a somewhat long time, one of his family went in search and found him lying on his back quite dead. The gentleman up to the hour of his death, was apparently in the enjoyment of good health. An inquest was held yesterday morning on the body by the Coroner, and a verdict of 'death from disease of the heart returned.'

A large libel suit has been commenced at Osgoode Hall, Toronto. Frank S. The conspiracy case in which M. C. Ellis, Walter Barr and F. H. Lee were charged with unlawfully limiting the facilities for transporting, producing, manufacturing, supplying, storing and dealing in watch cases and watch movements, on the complaint of Frank S. Taggart, jeweler, Toronto, seems to hang fire. It was brought up in the police court again last week. Another magistrate deemed it advisable to send the matter to a higher court, and as a consequence the issue will be tried at the next criminal assizes.

The case of the Ontario Bank against Frank S. Taggart came up for a lengthy hearing at the Assize Court, Toronto, last week, and as it promised to be of several days more duration, Judge Falconbridge laid it over until next week. The claim is for $2,500 on a promissory note, dated Sept. 3, 1891, made by Frank S. Taggart.

The Dueber Watch Case Mfg. Co.'s Suit Against the Defunct F. S. Taggart Co.

Toronto, Can., Jan. 21.—The Dueber Watch Case Mfg. Co., Canton, O., brought an action for $18,000 against the defunct F. S. Taggart Co., jewelers, of this city, consisting of Frank S. Taggart and Charles Campbell. The debt was for watches supplied to the Taggart company, but when that concern failed the Dueber Co. bought back the stock from assignee Clarkson. who was entrusted with the winding up of the insolvent company. On this ground the present action of the Dueber Co. was dismissed by Justice McMahon. The plaintiffs have taken an appeal from his judgment to the Court of Appeals.

Frank S. Taggart, formerly in business as a jeweler in Toronto, whose failure some American houses have cause to remember, now a mining speculator in Vancouver, B. C, has sued the 'Mining Record', of that city, and its editor, H. M. Lamb, for libel, claiming $10,000 damages. The offending paper reprinted from the London 'Critic' an article reflecting on Taggart with depreciatory comments of its own.
