W. W. Wood, a prominent citizen of Brampton Ont., died July 4th from heart failure, following an operation. He was in his 67th year. He was born at Fredonia, N. Y., and came to Brampton when quite young. He carried on a successful jewelry business for many years and was also local manager for the Great Northwestern Telegraph Co. He is survived by his widow and one daughter.

Tuesday, of last week, the Divisional Court, of Toronto, Ont., delivered judgment in an appeal case involving the right of an employer to discharge an employe working under contract for a yearly engagement. The action was brought by W. Clark, a mounter of jewelry, who was induced to come from England to work for the T. W. Capp Co., manufacturing jewelers, of Toronto. After two weeks’ service he signed an agreement binding him to work for the company for a year. Everything ran smoothly for five months, when Clark did some work which did not satisfy his employers and he was fined $1.45. He claimed that the company had no right to do this and consulted a lawyer, who wrote a letter demanding that Clark be paid in full for his work, whereupon the firm paid the money and dismissed Clark. The latter then sued for damages for the violation of the agreement and obtained a judgment for $125, from which the company appealed. The court sustained the judgment and dismissed the appeal, holding that Clark had not been offensive and had acted within his legal rights and that an isolated failure in maintaining the standard of workmanship did not justify dismissal.

Augustine Bouchard, Xavier Vaillancourt and Albert Nanton have been arrested on a charge of entering the store of Joseph L. Gravel, 711 St. Catherine St., Montreal, and stealing watches, chains, bracelets, rings, thimbles and other articles valued altogether at $800. The detectives have been working on the case for a month, and during that time they found about $500 worth of jewelry concealed in a sofa in Nanton’s house.

The jewelry store of C. Dawson, 198 Carlton St.. Toronto, Ont., was robbed of jewelry valued at $600 on the evening of Friday, Oct. 1. Mrs. Dawson and another lady were in charge, Mr. Dawson having gone out. The women were in a back room, when one man entered, leaving two confederates on guard outside, and snatched a tray containing brooches set with pearls. The men got away, but were afterwards arrested. Upon one of them, Fred. Parish, some of the stolen goods were found. He confessed to taking the articles and implicated the others, Malcolm McCoIlum and Harry Dewsbury, as his partners. The latter couple were also identified by Mrs. Dawson. The thieves were arraigned in the Police Court on Monday and remanded for a week.

Exports of Canadian jewelry during December were valued at $26,855, as compared with $29,133 for December, 1919. The total exports for the nine months ending December were valued at $235,448 as compared with $228,345 for December, 1919. The great bulk of the shipments were to Britain and Australia.

George T. Markle, of Thos. J. Porte & Markle, Ltd., Winnipeg, Man., has returned from an eastern trip, on which he made extensive purchases of novelties and art goods.

Four men and one woman were recently taken into custody in Winnipeg, Man., while trying to rob the store of Thomas J. Porte & Markle, of that place. Pawn tickets from Chicago and other cities were found in their possession. A trunk containing jewelry worth several thousand dol lars was also found in the house in which they lived.
