MOXEY, HOWLETT & Co.

Twelfh and Arch streets, Philadelphia

Moxey, Howlett & Co. - Philadelphia - 1914

Moxey, Howlett & Co—This firm states that when George P. Howlett died on March 30th last his interest in the concern ceased at that time, but that at no time since has the company been out of business for one second.

Moxey Howlett & Co., manufacturers of umbrellas, will resume their business under the old firm name.

Source: The Clothier and Furnisher - February 1908

Moxey, Howlett & Co. will retire from business as soon as liquidation can be effected, owing to the ill health of George Moxey, who is sole owner. He will finish up stock on hand, filling orders booked, and offers the machinery and fixtures at an attractive price, which provides an opportunity to continue an established business, as we understand satisfactory arrangements can be made to remain at the same location.

By the retirement of Mr. Moxey, there will pass from the field of business activity in this line one of the trade veterans who is the dean of the umbrella industry. His firm has been in business twenty-four years and his connection with the industry dates back to 1868. when he was employed by the famous house of Wright Bros. & Co. He has been prominently identified with the industry and is highly esteemed by the trade.

George T. Moxey, of the former firm of Moxey, Howlett & Co., Philadelphia umbrella manufacturers, died September 24 at his summer home on the Elk river near Chesapeake City, Md. He had been ill for some time, and about four years ago retired from business on account of failing health.

Mr. Moxey was sixty-six years old and had been identified with the Philadelphia industry for many years, starting with Wright Bros. & Co. about 1872. He continued in their employ, rising to a position of responsibility, until 1891, when he formed a partnership with George P. Howlett and Charles D. Gill, both of whom were also connected with Wright Bros. & Co. They started business as Moxey, Gill & Howlett, with a Boston branch in charge of Mr. Howlett. Fifteen years later Mr. Gill retired to become associated with James Stokley, of this city. Mr. Howlett died about seven years ago. and Mr. Moxey continued the business alone until four years ago, when he retired. He is survived by his widow and two married daughters.
