Tongs-M. Seller & Co.

Post by Traintime »

Notes: Previously noted as a dealer in housewares and commercial supply lines operating in Portland, Seattle, and Spokane. A catalogue from 1931 (M. Seller Company) has appeared on-line showing warehouses also in San Francisco and Los Angeles. [Bottle collectors have noted the branding name has been found in California sites.] An advert. shows this company selling early automobile tires in Idaho also, so they may have used Spokane to service clients east of the Washington border. Finally, an oyster fork in this pattern, with the company mark (as seen here) but no client logo, has appeared on-line. The pattern has not yet been ascertained, nor the originating maker. [Links to references witheld due to their commercial nature.] The item is 5 1/2" length...expected use sugar, but not ruling out bon bons (flat paddles on inner side). [The term Hardware is seen on company store fronts in photos. This term was used also to list commercial/hotel supply companies in western locations directories up to the early 1900's. It probably does not refer to hammers and screwdrivers.] Detail is worn, but composed primarily of two outside scrolls (acanthus like?) and central embellishment. No reeding or other detail on either piece.
