Using denim for polishing silver

Post by Peach »

Hi all! I bought a couple of lovely Birks sterling forks today....nice and heavy. I was watching TV and absent mindley started rubbing one of the forks across my thigh on my jeans. It warmed up fast and I looked at it and it had the most lovely polish on it...of course the jeans got dirty but I was thrilled with the tone of the silver without the tarnish. Rubbing on the denim took away the tarnish but left the patina on the silver. It was toned but not white if you get my meaning. Anyone else use denim to polish silver?

Denim is usually 100% cotton, so it would work like any buffing cloth. Just remember you are abraiding the metal with this method so each time you wear away some metal...

Thanks for sharing. I've never thought to use denim before, but we have a bunch of old jeans we need to turn into rags anyway so I'll give it a try. It's funny how simple things give us ideas.
