Hammered Christening Cup "JE" Shield Hallmark ID

Postby chelsea_kehde » Wed Apr 30, 2014 2:19 pm

Hello.
New to the forum, but have collected/dealt in Sterling and silverplate for a number of years. Recently got this christening cup, but have not been able to identify the hallmark. I believe it is an American mark, and with the hammer design probably dates to the 1910s or 1920s. As you can see from my pictures the hallmark is a shield with a "J. E." at the top, "0.925" in the center, and what appears to be a tiny eagle at the bottom. Beside the shield is an "M" - possibly a date code or artist initial? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Chelsea

Hi Chelsea,

Welcome to the Forum.

The mark is typical of the type used in South America, specifically Columbia.

For similar examples see: The 20th Century South American Trade

Trev,
Thanks for your reply! I see what you mean - that mark is very similar to the examples on that other post. I now have a starting place to re-start my search! Thanks again,
Chelsea
