I mention a second piece w/a newer style maker's mark in script (and a poor job of it may I add), and the same "11oz." mark.... here it is:

And of course I forgot to add the question: is it sterling like the other piece? and when was it made? The stamp looks rather modern.

Not a modern piece at all, the italic 'S. Kirk & Son', which appears to be triple-stamped for some reason, should date after 1868 (a book put out by Kirk in 1914 dates this mark as 1890-96); the '11 OZ' indicates, as on the other piece, 91.66 fineness (not sterling). Diameter or depth isn't mentioned, but suspect it might be an underplate...

Dang it Cheryl! I knew I'd forget something... here's some more pix.

It's not a (dinner plate) "charger" if that's what you mean by an underplate, it's only 8" across. And it's deep: the well in the center is 3/4th's of an inch or there'bouts. That's where I came up w/wine coaster.







I'd love to know what this is so that............... I can use it!

An underplate goes under another item that might have spills, like a gravy or sauce boat, syrup pitcher, child's bowl, etc. - but at that size and depth, your item is most likely, as you thought, a wine coaster...
