Butter Knife 7" Fish * W * Bird ?

Post by SilvTedII »

Hi !
I have this 7" Butter Knife that I know nothing about !
I think it's Sterling ?
It has the marks of a Fish and a "W" and then I think a Bird ?
What can you tell me about it ?
Many thanks, SilvTedII

I think the left mark in your photo is Nefertiti's bust, suggesting a date of 1912 or later. I can't say whether the second is W or M.

Looks like a typical mid 19th century hollow handle butter knife to me, American coin silver with pseudo-marks, most likely from New York state. My guess would be a 'W', but an 'M' is also a definite possibility - somewhere in the back of my head, seem to recall a similar mark connected to Albert Coles successor Morgan Morgans, Jr...

Similar Albert Coles mark as well as one with an anchor, both found on butter knives:
