Hallmarked Egypt but has Chinese marks also?

Postby alanb » Mon Apr 22, 2013 10:43 am

I have a lovely pair of silver vases and have managed to find a small set of marks stamped into the neck that are Egyptian 800 silver assayed in Alexandria 1942.

On the bottom is a Chinese mark ( I think)

Can anyone help trace the Chinese origin of these vases ?

(Inside a vase was a card handwritten as a gift to Mr & Mrs Massey from "The Secretaries of Egypt" Ismalia 1944.)

It is indeed a Chinese character mark. The characters stand for :

“Shanghai Fang-Jiu-Xia Run-Ji”, and in Chinese “上海 方九霞 潤記 ”

Fang-Jiu-Xia is one of the nine famous silver workshops in Shanghai. The last two characters at the very bottom of the mark is the name of one of its sub-branches, Run-Ji, which probably closed down at around year 1922.
