Sliding pencil.

Post by Granmaa »

Here's a little sliding pencil with perhaps a citrine stone and a slider covered in turquoise beads. The man from whom I bought it said it was 15ct gold.

Is it English and when was it made?

15ct almost certainly not English, probably Irish or American.
Where are the hallmarks?

Hi,
Why not English? 9, 12 & 15 karat (or carat) became legal standards in Britain in 1854. Jewelry and other small items were commonly marked 15ct. until both 12 & 15 carat were abolished in the 1930s and replaced by 14K.

Regards, Tom

Alas, there are no hallmarks; which is pretty common on gold pencils of this age. I imagine it was made c.1875. I thought it was English because there are some Sampson Mordan ones of very similar design.
