Italian ? 750 / 18K VA 37 or 87 marks

Post by user701 »

I think these marks are Italian, I know 750 denotes 18K, the town mark is VA for Varese then there is a 37 or it could be 87 for the makers mark / number. The shape of the surround, looks to be the one used between 1944 - 1968

The only thing that puzzles me is that when I have come across Italian mark previously, the number was first, then the town initials, the marks on the item are the other way round, town initials, then the numbers. Is it Italian?

I found several times makermarks with the initials of the city before of the number and not behind as prescribed.

I also tried to find the reason of this fact by writing to companies still operating, but they never have been able to give sure answers: these events occurred more than 60 years ago.
Probably some jewelers have made punches for themselves while waiting for the official ones from Rome.
Also the 750 in free field and not included in a lozenge, as prescribed, is not uncommon.
This evidence, however, argue in favor of VA 37 (FANTI Giacomo , Via Matteotti 22 Gallarate Varese) which had the identification number around 1948, shortly after the end of the WW2, rather than 87 VA (SOMMARUGA Luigi Via Roma, 11 Cassano MAGNAGO Varese)which had the identification number around 1955.

Thank you Amena for your reply and knowledge. It is a shame the companies did not reply to you.

I did find the maker Fanti Giacomo and thought it was more likely to be the maker of the piece rather than the other.

At least this is confirmation that it is Italian in origin.

Many thanks again.

I'm sorry that I was not clear.
The companies they replied, but now are conducted by persons other than those that were running in the years 1948-1955 and can not give an explanation to the fact

My apologies, I misread that part of your post / first reply.

Thank you for your help though with the marks.
