I found this ring while metal detecting near the site of a 1777 71st Scottish regiment sunken ship. Is it possible it's from that era or is it more likely a recent drop? How can I find out how old it is? Can you tell by the stamp in the ring?

I read the mark as STERLING which would not be found on an 18th century item but is used in the 20th century and since.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The style/font of the word 'STERLING' is very 20th century to my eyes.

In my opinion your ring can be dated to ~1900 (1890-1920). The style ist Jugendstil/ Art Nouveau.
