Silvermark JR with star

Post by Desideria »

I am doing research on a silver rosary made in the Netherlands and am having difficulty with the maker's mark and the sterling mark. I find it difficult to see the difference between the three different swords (before the numbers were added) and there seem to be several makers who used JR and a star. At first I thought it was Johan Casper Rennefeld, but his star seems to be always above the letters, and mine is beside. Now I think it might be J.L.E Reijnen. I have linked two photos. They are not that good, but these marks are very, very, tiny! Any help would be appreciated.

Hi welcom to the forum,

Yes, I believe it to be the makers mark for J. C. E. Reijnen located in the city of Gemert and registered between 1924/1947. The maker’s mark JR*, if you look closely at the form of the letter R, the right leg of the R confirms the makers ID.

The sword mark might confirm the date used between 1906-1953, 2nd standard silver of 833 fineness.

Thank-you! I had gone to the National Gallery of Canada and looked up Dutch Silvermarks (it looks like it is the same reference as you used above) but I could not go back to it to check again. Do you know anything about the maker? I have not been able to find anything about him at all, not even other examples of his work.

Hi, I found some little information about Johan Reijnen, in Dutch I translated:

Johan Reijnen has been a gold & silversmith, with a jewellery shop and lived at the Ridderplein in Gemert, his shop was located in the former building of the Hanzebank and to today has been turned into a pub called de Veldwachter.

The city of Gemert in the province Noord- Brabant, a stronghold of catholicism

Wonderful! I looked and looked (in English and in Dutch) and could find nothing. I read Dutch a little (my mother is Dutch) but appreciate the translation. Thanks again!
