INKWELL HALLMARK 1857

Post by cmdh00 »

Hi,
The item is an interesting inkwell with two rams, an imperial signature, and a star of david.

I'm looking to identify the silversmith of this item - hard to make out the letters.

The Assayer seems to be TT = Timofey Tripetsky although it according to http://www.925-1000.com/Frussia_assay_02.html he only started assaying in 1859 - two years later than this item. Any comments on that?

The city Vilnius mark does fit this assayer.

Has a Jewish Star of David as well as the imperial sign.

Hi.
Oel, I think, it isn't necessary.

Fake.

Typical Polish "souvenir" of "Jewish in Russian Empire".

Besides, Sazikov never worked in Vilno, and T. Tripetsky became a assayer only in 1859.

Look at the ``Sazikov`` mark. They have no idea about Cyrillic alphabet.
Look at the Star of David. It’s so poorly made. Whenever a piece by Sazikov is examined the first concern should be the excellence of craftsmanship.
Other issues, too, not to be discussed, though.

This is a typical example of that fakers do care and/or have no idea of how, where and when hallmarks and maker's marks should be used. Unfortunately they don't even have know because people not knowing a thing of (hall-)marks are anyway spending sometimes huge amounts by buying these fakes in good faith and the business if just flourishing...

Dear All,
Thank you for your expert opinions and input.
You helped clarify and prove my suspicions - that this indeed is a fake and cheap fabrication.
