russian napkin ring

Please tell me what the MC stands for or who the maker is of my rare russian napking ring. Thanks It has the Greek head facing to the right and the number 84 to the left of the head. The initials clearly M C, are right next to the date/city assay code. If you can zoom in on the top edge you will find the mark there. My camera is not the greatest for extreme close ups. For various reasons, I would say that this item is of very dubious origin and so I agree with silverport. It is not Russian, but a more modern fake.

Hi Victoria -

If you start buying Russian silver or in your case Russian enamel cloisonné you must know at least the essentials. If not - you are lost to the numerous existing and on online auctions sold "contemporary look alikes" - better: fakes

Ask yourself some questions:

Do I know what enamel clausonné is and how it is made? Do I know the differences between original objects and contemporary objects?
Do I know the Russian marking system, can I distinguish between fake marks and authentic marks?
Do I know the Russian enamel superstar Maria Semionova, her marks, her work, which technique she used, what are her typical enamel colours?
Do I know that real objects of her are as seldom as a jackpot in a lottery?
etc, etc, etc.

If you have one or more "No´s" as answer than it is best to stop buying Russian "antiques" !

If you realy care for Russian Silver than you should start reading the forum from A-Z and not buying...
