Identification requested on Victorian Box

Post by sgeosits »

I cannot identify the two marks on the base of this Victorian box.
The cover of the box is an image that is inspired from the Rococo painting "The Swing".
Any help in identifying these symbols is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,Hanau, Germany,pseudo marks.
The maker is Gebrueder Dingeldein (Brothers Dingeldein).
See here:

(under s540 and s 541).

See also under Karl Kurz.
(Karl Kurz Silberwarenfabrik: Kesselstadt). They merged with G.Dingeldein in 1911.
Hanau silversmiths used various combinations of pseudo marks. The nark s540 is well documented.

Hi! Thanks so much for such a quick identification. That's amazing. Yes, I can see the mark on the reference
you pointed out quite clearly!!! What's your thought on the other symbol that shows a crown above some type
of mark... I didn't see that on the Hanau pseudo marks page.

They used all sorts of pseudo marks and fantasy marks.Although exact combination of marks is sometimes seen, in most cases only one mark is enough to identify the maker.
For example, crowned fleur de lys is seen on Georg Roth silver but not exact match, and besides, mark s540 is very distinctive and well attributed to GD, so there is no doubt about the maker.

Hi members
I just have a thought the the quality of the lid on the box is much better than the base .could the lid not be original to the base. I would be interested in members views.
Kind Regards Guido.
