Bowl? Ashtray? Help ID .800 German silver item and maker

Post by pm_spielman »

Not even sure what this item is... a small bowl? Ashtray? It's ~13cm wide.

The mark looks like CHRISTOPH WIDMANN, except the C closes all the way around the W. Also, the style seems earlier to me. Any info on the item would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
Yes,it`s Christoph Widmann, Pforzheim. The imperfection in the mark (arrow) gives the impression of closed ``C``.
An example of his mark bellow. The style of the 16th-17th century silver, embossed with foliage and fruits.Very popular second half 19th century (e.g. Hanau) but also later.
It`s a bowl, (candy dish).
Regards
