Fish Snuff Bx

Post by fatkato »

Attached is a picture of a snuff box that my grandmother claimed has been in her family for some time. She was born in 1896 and claimed that it came down through her mother.

The head of the fish is hinged and inside are the hallmarks shown on the attached pictures.

Any help in identifying the hallmarks and possible date of manufacture would be appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Check out Simon Rosenau at: http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_hanau_marks_01.html and see how it compares.

Thank you. It is definitely a match to one attributed to Simon Rosenau. My only other question is the meaning of the numbers near the mark - one number is clearly an 8, but the other two digits are difficult to tell - one possible a 5 and the other a 1 or possibly 9?

Thank you for the assistance.

Hello, believe this to be a badly punched 800 for the fineness. Best wishes, Bahner
