unknown mark on frisian spoon, late 18. century

Post by R ingo »

Hello,
can someone help me with this makers mark? To my knowledge this type of late trefid-/ pied-de-biche- spoon was common in the middle and second half of the 18th century on the coastal region of the North sea (western Schleswig-Holstein and northern Lower Saxony. It would be also interesting to know for me, if this type is also common in the neighboring Netherlands).

The makers mark is not in the books from Stierling and Scheffler but interestingly the 12 lot mark is written in Roman numerals (XII). The usage of Roman numerals is evidenced by Scheffler only in two nearby citys in Eastern Frisia, northern Lower Saxony. This are the citys Jever and Neustadt-Goedens (today part of the municipality Sande).
The engraved unusual family name is also widely-used and popular in this region.
So there is much to suggest that the spoon was made in one of this two cities in eastern Frisia.

The makers mark seems to be "DH". Could it be the mark from the silversmith Johann Diederich Haupt, born circa 1767 (Scheffler) from Neustadt-Goedens?

Thanks and kind regards,
Ringo

last attempt,
here is a better photo of the mark. If the mark is to read upside down, there are a lot of other possible combinations.
Kind regards,

Hello,
I know from the internet, that in the museum of local history of the city Neustadt-Goedens is a silverwork from the master Johann Diederich Haupt. So I asked the museum and the local folk society/ tradition society to tell me if it bears the same mark like the spoon. But neither the museum nor the folk society answered.

If someone of the forum members by chance lives in this region and could visit this museum for comparing the marks, I would be glad.

Kind regards,
Ringo

I would like to thank the museum Neustadt-Goedens for the information, that the mark of Johann Diederich Haupt is an "H". His mark is not in Scheffler/ Niedersachsen.
So he is not the maker of the spoon.

Kind regards,
Ringo

The answer:
I have ask an expert for frisian silver (soon he will publish a book about it).
It is the mark from the silversmith Johann Diederich Haupt from Neustadt-Goedens in east frisia, Lower Saxony.

Kind regards,
Ringo
