can someone help me with this makers mark? To my knowledge this type of late trefid-/ pied-de-biche- spoon was common in the middle and second half of the 18th century on the coastal region of the North sea (western Schleswig-Holstein and northern Lower Saxony. It would be also interesting to know for me, if this type is also common in the neighboring Netherlands).
The makers mark is not in the books from Stierling and Scheffler but interestingly the 12 lot mark is written in Roman numerals (XII). The usage of Roman numerals is evidenced by Scheffler only in two nearby citys in Eastern Frisia, northern Lower Saxony. This are the citys Jever and Neustadt-Goedens (today part of the municipality Sande).
The engraved unusual family name is also widely-used and popular in this region.
So there is much to suggest that the spoon was made in one of this two cities in eastern Frisia.
The makers mark seems to be "DH". Could it be the mark from the silversmith Johann Diederich Haupt, born circa 1767 (Scheffler) from Neustadt-Goedens?
Thanks and kind regards,
Ringo
